Castles – Crusader
castle
There are a number of castles in Jordan that were founded or occupied throughout the Crusades, the series of religiously sanctioned military campaigns and subsequent occupation of parts of the Holy Land by Roman Catholic forces. These took place over a period of almost 200 years, and the area that is now Jordan was mainly affected in the course of the 12th century AD.

The crusader occupation of Jordan was restricted to a reasonably narrow belt, from the Wadi Mujib to the Gulf of Aqaba. Even this was lost within two or 3 generations by way of the swelling Muslim reaction, which culminated in the shattering Crusader defeat at the hands of Salah ad-Din (Saladin) at the Battle of Hattin (AD 1187).

Kerak is 1 of the castles built for the duration of the Crusades, and lies at a strategic point in the midst of the rich agricultural lands on the Plateau in between the Wadi Mujib and Wadi el-Hasa. The origins of the castle lie in the mid-12th century. Expanding eastwards from Jerusalem, for economic causes as much as anything else, the Crusader kings of Jerusalem started granting land to people. Pagan the Butler was granted permission by King Fulk at Jerusalem to enhance the defenses in ‘Oultrejourdain’ (Old French for &quotbeyond the Jordan&quot). One result was the great castle at Kerak, built in 1142. The castle continued to be strengthened by Pagan’s successors, since of repeated attacks by Nur al-Din and Salah ad-Din between 1170 and 1187. Salah ad-Din eventually took the castle in November 1188.

Castle of St. Peter The Liberator in Bodrum, Turkey.

The castle was constructed by the Knights Hospitaller in the 15th century in the course of the crusades of the middle ages. The fortress became recognized as the Castle of St. Peter The Liberator simply because it served as the sole spot of refuge for all Christians on the west coast of Asia Minor. The Knights kept a unique breed of dog in the Castle, who could track down refugees and bring them to safety, considerably like the renowned St. Bernard.

Occupying more than 30.000 square feet at its base, construction of this castle took years to total. The castle was built partly from the left remains of the mausoleum of Mausolus which had collapsed as the result of an earthquake. The enormous exterior walls were created in the early 15th century by the German architect Heinrich Schlegelholt and had been strengthened by five towers known normally as the English tower, the Italian tower, the German tower, the French tower and the Snake tower. The French tower of the castle is believed to be the earliest one with the others being added for the duration of the following century. Soon after the French Tower The Italian tower was built in 1436 by Italian architect Angelo Mascettola. The final parts of the castle were erected in the time of Pierre d’Abusson among 1476 and 1593, with the English tower getting added at around 1480. The walls of the Bodrum castle contain the practically 250 coats of arms and armorial bearings of several of the knights that served there. Captured in 1522 by the Ottomans for the duration of the reign of Kanuni Sultan Suleyman, the church on the castle was converted into a mosque.
